SHREVEPORT, LA - Visitation will be held to celebrate the life of Travis R. Cook on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Rose Neath's Southside Chapel at 10:00 a.m. followed by graveside services at Forest Park East at 12:00 noon officiated by Rev. Bob Moore. Travis was born in Newsome, Texas on April 15, 1921 and passed away in his sleep on March 6, 2014 at his home in Shreveport, Louisiana surrounded by his family.
Travis was a member of America's Greatest Generation. He grew up during the depression with his 8 brothers and sisters. After graduating from Indian Rock High School in 1939, he started working for Gilmer Motor Co. On a blind date, he met and ultimately married, Helen Smith. Shortly after their wedding, Travis was drafted into the Army Air Corps and served during WWII. Upon his return home, he and Helen relocated to Shreveport and together they raised 3 children. Travis worked as an independent insurance claims adjuster and developed a passion for gardening as well as hunting and fishing. Always ready with a story, Travis was known for his quick wit and charming smile. On February 7, 2014, Travis and Helen celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. To the end, Travis was strongly independent and at age 92 still lived at home with the love of his life, Helen.
Travis was preceded in death by his son, Gordon Dale Cook and his daughter, Susan Ann Cook Kelley. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Cook; his son Jerry Dean Cook and his wife Carrol; his sister, Eugenia Ballowe; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives.
