Surrounded by his family, James Wright Stockard, Jr. (Jimmy) passed away peacefully in Orlando, Florida on August 27, 2014.
Jimmy Stockard was a loving, optimistic, enthusiastic, hardheaded, creative and God fearing man. He never met a stranger nor did he ever find a cheeseburger po-boy that he didn't enjoy.
.Jimmy was born in 1935 to James and Hazel Stockard of Shreveport, LA. He was a proud member of the Fair Park Class of 1953 and following a short stint at Louisiana Tech he joined the Army to see the world. He spent three years in the Army's 11th and 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft Kobbe in the Panama Canal Zone. He stated that after his Army "maturing experience", he came home to Shreveport and married his lovely wife Peggy Anne Murphey in 1958. They both attended college together at Northwestern in Natchitoches where he earned both a B.A. and M.Ed. degrees. While supporting his wife and three children Jimmy would go on to earn a Ph.D. in 1970 from LSU. He served on the Caddo Parish School Board for 28 years in positions ranging from classroom teacher to assistant superintendent. He spent 13 years in Alabama as a professor at Auburn University and then returned to his beloved state of Louisiana where he would serve on the faculty of LSU until his retirement in May of 2011.
Jimmy will be remembered fondly by his family and by his friends. He was the Auburn and then LSU professor whose classes students always looked forward to attending. He was everyone's most enthusiastic cheerleader offering words of encouragement and solid advice. He was a connoisseur of Louisiana cuisine and music and he was the LSU Tiger's most loyal fan. He was full of laughter and love. His grandchildren and children may fondly remember him as "Big Time" and as the family's most proficient belly drum player and "snacky-poo" artist.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Peggy Murphey Stockard of Orlando, Florida and children Renee (Steve) Peralta of Baton Rouge, LA, Jennifer (Tim) Huckaby and Trey (Gail) Stockard, all of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by five grandchildren Ashley Anderson, Amanda (Kevin) Gleason, Sean Huckaby, Alyssa Peralta and Sophia Peralta and four great-grandchildren, Megan Wainwright, Chanden Anderson, Michael Gleason and Aaliyah Huckaby, sister Joanie (Larry) Samms of Hemphill, TX and sister-in-law Frances Murphey of Shreveport, LA. He is preceded in death by his parents Hazel and James Stockard of Shreveport, LA.
Funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 11am at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 5 to 7pm at the funeral home.
