Bonjour, Ya'll

Mary Lynn Tumniello Johnson sent this update on their vacation.

Bonjour Ya'll,

We are in Grenoble for the night. When we left Nice in the rental car, we began our drive north and in a small town called Catallane, we veered west for a while to see the gorges in southern France. They are quite remarkable. You have to like to look at rock and mountains to enjoy them! I do.

Then we made it to a town called Dinge du Bain and spent the night. We found a small pension hotel and thought we were the only ones there when another couple showed up. It was more of a bed and breakfast though named Hotel Provence. Nice lady running the place. We walked to dinner to a restaurant of her recommendation and because she would be gone when we got back, she gave us the code to the front door.

This morning, I think this is still Sunday, after eating our continental breakfast, we got directions to a Laundromat and went to wash clothes. The bulk was P's t-shirts, socks and briefs. I had a couple of gowns, house coat and one pair of jeans. Other clothes were too far buried to dig out! The jeans turned P's clothes a faded blue. Cost ten euro to wash (about $15) and only 4 euros for the large dryer.

The drive to Grenoble was beautiful. Saw some snow on the ground in parts. And it got colder as we drove north.

We have a Mercedes Benz sedan. The two large bags and one bag of souvenirs are in the trunk and the two small bags and miscellaneous items are in the back seat. Phillip has been figuring out the car as we drive. It has a CD player and I brought a few music albums and two audio stories. We decided to start with the music. Couldn't figure out how to get the CD to work. I began to push buttons, even two at a time and got it to accept one album. Now we cannot figure out how to get it ejected. That's a job for tomorrow.

In Grenoble we located a Best Western across from the gare (train station). There is a locked parking lot by the hotel and we wanted to secure the car. Walked away from the hotel to find a French restaurant recommended by front desk and immediately saw a Chinese restaurant. We changed our food choice then and there.

We ordered won ton soup and a vermicelli soup followed by a chicken dish, pork dish and fried rice. The sauce on the two main dishes was red. I guess we eat Tex-Chi at home! It was good, but different. We enjoyed the different food. Across the street at the train station is a McDonalds.  They are everywhere in this country. I have seen a couple of KFC places but not many.

To read some news in English we bought two papers at the train station. Shortly, I will read them.

Tomorrow we will keep going north and hope to get past Geneva to Strasbourg, France. Still hoping to get to Dresden and Berlin.

That's all for now. Will see what our next stop brings us for computer usage.

Love to all,

Mary Lynn and Phillip (who didn't type a word of this but gets credit in the salutation)
