Sallie Asbell
Shreveport, LA - Sallie Mae Thomas Asbell, 92, of Blanchard, Louisiana passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 10, 2013 surrounded by family. She was born February 9, 1921 in Alachua, Florida. She married the love of her life at the age of 14, and left just 12 days before their 78th wedding anniversary. Services in her honor will be held at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, 9382 Primitive Baptist Church Rd., Shreveport, LA 71107 on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation preceding from 11:00-1:00 p.m.
Sallie, affectionately known as "Granny" to those close to her, both young and old, lived her life to the fullest. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Many of her children and grandchildren's fondest memories were made by her side fishing off Cross Lake pier. She received her greatest joy from taking care of others, putting their needs before her own. She was a firm believer in always doing right, living and teaching by the principle that we should "do unto others as you would have them do to you," Luke 6:31.
Sallie Asbell was preceded in death by her parents Zadock Thomas and Mary Cason, three siblings, and sons, Preston, Herman, and Norman Asbell Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband Norman Asbell, Sr., son Joe and wife Gloria Asbell, daughter Kay and husband John Perez; grandchildren, Monica and John Whitmer, Donna Tolbert, Danny and Dawn Asbell, Theresa Glover, and Cathy Greer; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Serina, Sarah and Aaron, Robert, Caleb, Noah, Carson, and Camden; and great-great-grandchildren, Addison, Ruby, and Miley. Her legacy will surely live on.
"Granny" was a unique and precious lady who loved to live and loved to love. She maintained her spunk, compassion, and sense of humor through all her days. As her health declined, she chose a poem and gave a copy to each of those close to her, reading:
"Miss Me, But Let Me Go"
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no tears in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free
Miss me a little but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go
For this is a journey we all must take
And for each must go alone
Its all a part of a bigger plan
A step on the road to home
And when you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your tears in their loving arms
Miss me, but let me go.
She always told us "It will be a wonderful day when I meet my maker."
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either in Memphis, Tennessee, or to Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in honor of Sallie Mae Thomas Asbell 2/9/21-8/10/13
