Thoughts On Reunion Planning

In planning the 50th year reunion a total of 3 hardcopy mailings were used to ensure that as many classmates as possible were contacted. Both regular letters and postcards were used in this effort. Because of the large size of our class, and the ever increasing cost of traditional mailings, the total cost of the mailings was about $1,000 according to information provided by Frank Bright.

Mailing expenses would have been even higher had not email and the Blog page of the class web site been used to share the 5 updates prepared on the status of reunion planning. Had that information been mailed in hard copy form the total mailing cost could have easily doubled, or perhaps gone even higher. Posting those 5 updates on the class web site Blog also makes them available to classmates who might not have been on the mailing list at the time the updates were emailed.

Using the online approach to stay in contact as a class is an obvious step we must use to minimize hard copy mailing expenses for future reunions. But to be effective this means each online classmate needs to keep their email and home address information current in the class alumni records. Also, it would be helpful if everyone routinely reads the Fair Park related emails in their email inbox and on the Blog. Some classmates have told us they hardly ever turn on their computer. If you are in that category, going online once a week would probably be enough to stay current on class related matters.

To make it easy to keep your home and email address information up-to-date an Address Update form was added to our class web site more than a year ago. There is still lots of room for greater use of that resource since only about 40% of the classmates for whom we have address and email information have used the Update form to confirm their information.

Adding your current contact information to the Address Update form can usually be done in less than two minutes. The form should be used when any changes to any contact item is needed. If fact, it would be a good idea to use the form at least once a year even if your information hasn’t changed.

If you have questions that I didn’t cover in this article, use the News Link at the top right of the Blog page to get in touch with me.

FPHS 1961 Reunion Update - FINAL

January 22, 2011

Hello Classmates,

This will be our last mail-out. Based on the responses so far, it looks like we will have a large turnout on the weekend of April 1-2, 2011, for our 50th reunion celebration. A list of classmates who have told us that they are coming is listed below.

Registration is $120 per couple and $65 for singles until March 1st. After March 1st the cost will be $140 per couple and $75 for singles. Register now and SAVE! It really helps our planning if you register early. Make your check payable to FPHS Reunion 1961, and mail to FPHS Reunion 1961, P. O. Box 761, Shreveport, LA 71162. A registration form is at the very bottom of this letter. For those of you have already sent in your check, please email the form to Jerry Cook.

If you need room reservations, the Holiday Inn Financial Plaza (Holidome) has a limited block of rooms for us at $89 plus tax per night. Call 318-688-1877, and mention FPHS 1961.

The feedback was clear that people wanted plenty of time to visit with classmates. Dinner (heavy hors d‟oeuvres) will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, at the Holiday Inn Financial Plaza. We will have a short program with Charlie Ogletree as master of ceremonies. The class photograph will be taken by a professional photographer at about 8:30 p.m., after dinner. The price for an 8”x10” print is $20, payable when the photo is taken. There will be “50s-60s” music and dancing, memorial boards (Betty Molcany), and a memory/writing wall (Mary Lynn Tuminello) for your thoughts from your days in high school.

We will have a hospitality suite Friday afternoon and night (cold hors d’oeuvres and beverages) and on Saturday. It is Room 116, and it opens onto the atrium.

Open House (Hollis Thompson and Earle Valentine) is set at Fair Park from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday. We will have a short ceremony remembering our deceased classmates in the auditorium at 9 a.m. with ministers Willis Dear, Gordon Ferguson, John Pierce, and Larry Fields officiating.

There will be a "Coke Party" for the women at Dinah Netherton‟s home at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Her address is 3390 Jolly Napier Road. From downtown take Pines Road exit off of I-20 and right (North) on Pines to Jefferson Paige Road (about 3 miles) and go left for about 3 miles on Jefferson Paige to Jolly Napier. Go right on Jolly Napier and take second driveway on left. Her cell is 318-518-5478.

If you have memorabilia that you are willing to share with us at the reunion, the contact person is Judy Brooks. She is working on decorations with Denise Schneider and Judy Cromer. Joanie Stockard advises that the Good Sam Park on West 70th Street is convenient and is recommended by her if you are bringing an RV.

Adult beverages will be available Saturday night on a "cash bar" basis at the Holiday Inn‟s Huddle Room which is located in the atrium.

If you have contact information for a teacher that you would like to invite, please provide that to us and we will make the contact. Teachers get to come "free". So far, we know about Mrs. Jo Allen, Martha and Clem Henderson, Joe May, Sarah and A.L. Williams, and Anita Harkness.

Robin, at the James Burton Foundation, jamesburtonfest@aol.com or 318-424-5000, can set up a special tour of the Municipal Auditorium on Friday, if there is enough interest. Their regular tour schedule is on Saturday from 11a.m. until 4 p.m. The fee is $5.00 per person. They are pretty flexible on the tour length, with about 30 minutes being a short version. There are displays of memorabilia from the Louisiana Hayride days, and the building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Classmate, Louise Abbott and her husband, guitarist James Burton, are active Friends of the Municipal Auditorium. The Web site is www.municipalauditorium.homestead.com

Keep in mind the State Exhibit Museum, Norton Art Gallery and grounds (azaleas) and the McNeill Street Pumping Station for other sites to see.

You can check our Web site (or have a family member or friend do so if you are a little challenged) for more reunion details www.fairpark1961.net. If you have not used the Address Update feature please try to do that so that we will have your correct contact information. Please include your e-mail address if you have one. It will not be shared with anyone but our classmates and you won't be getting a bunch of e-mails from us. Bill Scott has done a fantastic job creating and maintaining the class Web site.

Communication central is Jerry or Carrol Ann Hanson Cook 318-925-0780 or fphs61jerry@gmail.com or the P.O. Box 761, Shreveport, LA 71162.

The Finish Line Is Near

A walk that began at the Pacific Ocean in August 2010 is scheduled to come to an end this week on the North Carolina coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Jeff Rudisill, aka The Walkingman, can lay claim to having walked  across America, about 2800 miles, for no other reason than he wanted to do it.

Jeff is 69 years old and has enabled many to follow his walk through his daily Blog postings. If you are interested in following along on the final week of his walk just click on the following link: www.walkingman2011.blogspot.com/

Did You Know?

The description in this video of how social security numbers were assigned probably do not apply to us since zip codes weren't around prior to 1963. However, they should apply to our children and grandchildren.

Was My E-mail Hacked?

I saw this article today and thought it might help some of us avoid this problem. Its a long read, but worth the effort.

Was My E-mail Hacked?
ARTICLE DATE: 01.05.11

By  Neil J. Rubenking

Picture this scenario. A friend asks you why you sent her a badly-spelled e-mail inviting her to buy medicines in Canada, or why you sent an attachment that her antivirus detected as a threat. You know you didn't send any such thing. How did it happen? Did a hacker invade your e-mail account? What should you do to protect yourself?

In the past month several friends and colleagues have come to me worrying that their accounts may have been hacked. Apparently this sort of problem is on the rise. The good news is that these symptoms don't necessarily mean your account was hacked. The bad news is that recovering from an actual hack can be tough.

Somebody Else Got Hacked

Strangely enough, the actual source of the problem might have almost nothing to do with you. A successful virus attack on one of your correspondents could cause precisely the symptoms described. Here's how it happens.

An e-mail virus arrives in someone's Inbox as an executable attachment or a link. If it manages to launch without getting caught by the antivirus it quickly goes to work replicating itself. First, it harvests all the addresses from the Contacts list. It may also flip through e-mail messages or documents to find more addresses. When it has collected everything it can, it silently mails itself to each harvested address. The virus doesn't use an e-mail client for this, so the messages definitely won't appear in the "sent items" folder.

Of course, a goodly portion of these collected addresses will be inactive or otherwise invalid. The virus's activity could generate a flood of "undeliverable mail" warnings back to the victim's e-mail account, a flood that would reveal the virus's presence.

To avoid giving away its presence, the virus takes advantage of the e-mail protocol's weak security. It's quite simple to tweak the header of an e-mail message so it shows any arbitrary address as the sender. The virus code simply picks one of the harvested addresses and "spoofs" it as the sender address.

So, your cousin Mel has an e-mail virus. You're in Mel's address book. The virus chose your address as its false sender. People receiving the message think it came from you, but in truth there's no direct connection. Unfortunately, that also means there's no easy way to identify the true source of the problem, but in this scenario you're perfectly safe.

You Got Hacked

Of course, it's possible that somebody really did hack your e-mail account, or simply guessed your password. The moment you suspect such a problem, change your e-mail password to a new strong password that the bad guys won't guess.

Web-based e-mail accounts often include a setting for a backup contact account, some way the provider can contact you if you're having trouble with the Web-based account itself. Double-check this to make sure it hasn't been changed to some other account; if it has, you know for sure that you've been hacked.

Review any other personal profile settings, things like address and telephone information. This would also be a good time to change your security questions and answers. Most Web-based e-mail systems won't show the answers that you saved previously, so a hacker couldn't view them. Still, it's better to take no chances.

Who Got Hacked?

Unless you have hard evidence like changes to your account profile, determining whether your account was actually hacked can be tough. The spurious messages purportedly sent from your account do contain clues, for those who can decipher them. If possible, have an expert look over the header data from such a message. An ordinary forwarded message is no good, so the friend who received the offending message will have to forward it as an attachment.

Try to pick a friend who uses a standard e-mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird, as opposed to checking mail on the Internet. To send the offending message as an attachment, your friend just needs to drag it onto the message being composed.

If you can't get expert help or if you're still not sure afterward, the safest bet is to act as if the account really was hacked.

Recovering From a Hack

If you verify that a hacker truly has compromised your e-mail account, you've got cleanup work to do. Did you use the same password on any other secure Web sites? If so, you'll need to find and change all of those. And of course you should notify your correspondents that the account was hacked and warn them to ignore strange messages they may have received.

Double-check your profile information to be sure that the answers to security questions are never revealed, not even when you're logged in with the proper password. In the rare case that the answers weren't hidden, you'll need to visit every other secure site you frequent and change any where you've used the same security question and answer. Here's the worst-case scenario. There's a possibility the hacker could change the password and security questions, effectively locking you out of the account. In that case your only recourse is to throw yourself on the mercy of the provider. Contact support, report your problem, and be prepared to prove in painful detail that you are the true and valid account owner. And start thinking about what account name you'll use in case you have to abandon the hacked account and start over.

Staying Safe

As noted, some events completely unrelated to you can cause symptoms that look like your account was hacked. To head off the possibility of a real attack, review your e-mail accounts and change the password for any that might be guessed easily. Make sure all the passwords are different from each other, too. A password manager like LastPass 1.50 can help. If the e-mail provider lets you make up your own security questions and answers, do so rather than accepting the standard questions. And never, ever give your password to anyone. A little preparation can make your e-mail account uninviting enough that hackers will move on to the next guy, the one whose password is "password."

Address Info Updates Needed

If you haven’t used the Update Address form available on the class web site to provide and/or confirm your home and email address info, please put that task high on your TO DO list. The Update form only takes about 2 minutes to complete. Your info ensures we have the very best info available on how to contact you quickly with updates regarding the reunion, or any other alumni matters.

If you aren’t sure you have provided your latest address info, the best thing to do is complete the update form. If you have previously confirmed your info but some part of your info has changed, please complete the form again. Getting the data via the form lets us copy and paste your info directly into the class alumni records. That  minimizes typos and input time.

I encourage you to give this matter your personal attention so we can get this task completed quickly. Thanks.
