As I headed out the door to do a little grocery shopping on Thursday of last week I noticed a box sitting off to one side on my porch. The box wasn’t large (15” long x 13” wide x 5'” high) and had a UPS label, my address, and a return address for someone in Louisville, KY.
I was momentarily puzzled because I wasn’t expecting anything from anyone. Then I remembered that two days earlier I had responded to a Google request to be considered for testing one of their new notebooks that run on the Chrome Operating System (OS). I had read that Google was going to provide about 60,000 of the new notebooks to folks willing to put them through their paces. As I stood looking at that package on my front porch I wondered if Google had sent me one on their new notebooks so quickly.
I brought the box into the house and opened it. Sure enough I was looking at one of the brand new Google OS notebooks. Not only was I totally surprised at being selected, but receiving the notebook just two days after I put my name in the hopper was very surprising. I figured there was very little chance of being selected, but this one “had my name on it.”
I put the battery charger on the notebook to let it start charging, and headed out to do my grocery shopping. Surprisingly, I didn’t forget anything I needed at the grocery store. But if anyone looked closely they saw a guy who was grinning like he was 7 years old and it was Christmas morning!
The battery lasts about 8 hours on each charge and I’ve run it down twice since I got the computer. If anyone has questions about Google’s new Chrome OS approach to using a computer drop me a note and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.
